Get lost, Rishi.

Before the egregious Kemi Badenoch appointed an arch-warmonger, Tommy Tugendhat, as shadow foreign secretary, I was prepared to give the Tory party the benefit of the doubt. I was willing to wait for the conference publication of her culture and integration commission report. It is better to have a realistic and competent policy than an ambitious but unrealistic and incompetent policy, the type we might expect from the Slop Right.

But if Tommy Tugendhat wasn’t enough to put me off, the latest outing from Rishi Sunak, most certainly is. He asserts:

In Britain we've built the world's most successful multi-faith, multi-ethnic democracy. I was a beneficiary of it. Whatever issues people had with me as PM (and there was no shortage) my race and religion weren't among them. I could read a lesson at the King's coronation or light Diwali diyas on Downing Street with my daughters without controversy. Foreign leaders assumed these must be huge symbolic moments. For most Brits, they just weren't that big a deal.

He goes on to say:

If you're born and brought up in England and view it as home, what are you other than English? Denying people their Englishness or their Britishness because of the colour of their skin is a recipe for alienation and a two-tier society. How are children who hear this meant to feel?

Sport can play a small but significant role here. Cricket is played by nearly every major ethnic group in this country. Ask what my largely white rural constituents in the Dales and the British-Asian kids in Bradford have in common, and the answer is cricket. If cricket can produce England teams in which every kid can see themselves, the impact reaches far beyond the boundary.

Elsewhere in The Times, he further asserts:

“We cannot have a situation where people who live here, who feel British, who embrace our culture and embody our values, who strive to be the best members of society they can be, are marked down because you won’t find their name in the Domesday Book”.

I’m have to start with the claim that “we’ve built the world’s most successful multi-faith, multi-ethnic democracy”. This is the same week in which an Islamist Member of Parliament has called for military action against Israel, and we have a growing problem with bloc voting and violent sectarianism. If that is a “successful multi-faith, multi-ethnic democracy”, I’d hate to see what an unsuccessful one looks like.

Further confusing is the assertion that “We cannot have a situation where people who live here, who feel British, who embrace our culture and embody our values” are “marked down”. By Sunak’s yardstick, you can “feel British” if you play cricket in the back streets of Keighley where you’re unlikely to see an actual British person.

Moreover, by his own admission, Sunak does not “embrace our culture and embody our values”. He’s just admitted he raises his daughters in the Indian tradition, and we should recall that he was so unmoved by D-Day commemorations that he swanned off early to do a TV spot.

I don’t know where he gets off really. I do not consent to my country being reduced to a system of arbitrary "British values" - ever diluted by mass immigration - and I do not consent to being governed by foreigners - especially ones with dual loyalties.

It would be easy to write this off as the delusional wittering of a failed MP (there are plenty of them now) but his comments have been met with high praise by Tory defence spokesmen, Ben Obese Jecty, and Tory chairman Kevin Hollinrake. The men who would have a Nigerian anchor baby as Prime Minister.

I was half prepared to overlook that latter part if the Tory party in some way presented as competent and serious, but it now doesn’t matter what Badenoch’s policy commission says. We’ve seen what senior Tory MPs really think, and they’re just as addled on multiculturalist dogma as ever. It rather suggests the same old dynamic in play. Robustly right wing in opposition but liberal in government. A leopard can’t change its spots. Moreover, if Badenoch were to purge all of her liberals, I struggle to imagine who’d be left.

This is not to say I fully embrace doctrinal ethno-nationalism, not least because its implementation is wholly unrealistic, but there has to be some rules. The prime minister of our country cannot be of foreign descent or have dual citizenship, nor can we allow anyone not born and raised here to hold a public office of any kind.

If native Britons have no more rights and someone who rocked up yesterday who says they “feel British”, then citizenship means nothing at all. And if playing cricket is all that’s required to “feel British” then that includes half the Indian subcontinent, at a time when the ones who are already here are not wanted.
