The port blockade protest in Portsmouth over the weekend has caused a number of ripples over the last couple of days - not least widespread antipathy towards the RNLI - the cause of much establishment media revulsion.
I like the recent very clever protest that occurred at Dover. No mobile phones, no violence, zero arrests. Why did Farage condemn it? This needs repeating and with much larger scale. Reform should be supporting it.
Of course, there are a lot of people who decry Matt Goodwin and say that he is wrong. They are usually people who are fully in favour of the rapid demographic changes in the UK. This has nothing to do with racism. It is about a population with its own culture rapidly being displaced. It is about the entire character of a country rapidly changing, because of large numbers of immigrants from totally different cultures that are often in conflict with western culture and expectations. I think the extent and the pace of change has been far too great to be absorbed easily by the existing population, and that this is causing a backlash. It is not only the UK that is experiencing this of course. .The same thing is happening in all western countries and I think it is very dangerous. In addition, the volume of immigration in a very short period of time is leading to the inadequacy of infrastructure to cope. That is housing, roads, hospitals, GP's, schools etc etc. The UK Government is already spending nearly 50% of the country's income. It can't go much further. This is now causing what we are seeing, economic stagnation, increased taxation and the inadequacy of facilities and infrastructure to cope. At some point there will be an economic crash and that is when things will start to unravel in a dangerous way. I'm not against immigration at all, for obvious reasons, but I do think that it has to be controlled and very selective with immigrants being people who can adapt to western culture. . .
As I've said before either here or on Pete's father's Turbulent Times street protest without clear demands will achieve little except give the government a target to hit to cover their own incompetence.
The Chartists of 1838 had six demands and became supported by a mass people's movement which convinced both Conservative and Liberal politicians to enact five of the six. Only their demand for annual General Elections was thankfully never adopted!
If we are to reform our governance and democracy then we must have a system where the 'people' have real power over their politicians turning them into our servants and not our masters.

When he died in 2008 as his executor I had charge of the funeral service and the coffin was taken out to the singing of this, the Naval Hymn, knowing his affection for it. It was always sung at the ever-dwindling reunions of his other surviving shipmates.
He served at Dunkirk and on the Artic Convoys but mainly in the Med so at Alexandria, Crete and the relief of Malta. The hymn is sung to the tune Melita. This is the Ancient Greek and Roman name for Malta meaning honey for which it was famous.

They were lucky this time that they were not diverted from an essential rescue elsewhere at the time. They did not deserve as individual volunteers to be physically or verbally abused but if they do it again they will now do so in the full knowledge that a sizeable number of the public considers it highly inappropriate that they as a charity should be doing the dirty work of the fully taxpayer-funded Border Control. There was no emergency and the vessel that left France was shadowed by the French by boat and helicopter for most of the novel much longer route at a reported cost to them of 100,000 Euros. I have not read any report that this vessel was ever “in peril on the sea” at any point so that under the customary law of the sea any other available craft should lend assistance and if need be attempt rescue.
For me as a lawyer the “passengers” in these vessels should accept that they have chosen to risk their lives. We have a legal maxim “Volenti non fit injuria”: a person who willingly exposes himself to harm can expect no remedy.
A registered charity enjoys numerous privileges, not least exemptions from taxes and taxpayer funding via Gift Aid on its donations. It must stick rigidly to carrying out its charitable activities and is open to censure if it engages in “political activity”. Examples of this are set out in Charity Commission guidance. These do not seem to explicitly cover what the RNLI did as they are aimed mainly at party political financing, lobbying and campaigning. I doubt the Commissioners ever envisaged that a charity would use its assets to do an unpaid favour for the Home Office as a ferry service in a non-emergency.
The recent incident is water if not under the Bridge then across the Channel. If it recurs I will be contacting the Commission to enquire whether the RNLI is acting outwith its charitable objects.

Lea Anderson is a straight talking northerner and Farage has never changed his tune about immigration for over 20 years and he has had to suffer extreme abuse. We even lost the wonderful Ann. There are good things in Reform and I believe they will do all they say - if they do what they say this country stands half a chance but we all have to get behind them. People in this country are still blind to the truth of whats happening. Reform are fighting the establishment and the media. If people are at sea like Edward Lear's Jumblies it is reasonable to believe that they are in danger, whether it is their fault or not. It is reasonable to rescue them first and ask questions afterwards. In principle, if they are outlaws they should be punished. The government should be held responsible, not the RNLI.
