The Guardian reports that Andy Burnham has opened the door to the UK rejoining the EU, saying Britain could “go all the way”, as he prepares to reconsider Labour’s post-Brexit red lines.
As I've just written on Julian Jessop's substack the one bit of good news, maybe two is that Burnham's vision of a Socialist Britain and his Euphile view's ( be it the EU or Euro) is now a legitimate target for debate.
There is no 3rd way, halfway house with Burnham - the answer is Socialism and Brussels all the way.
It gives leavers , and centre right voters something to galvanise around - the Idea that we effectively go back to a state led government of the 1970s is for the fairies - the mask has slipped, it's time to take back control from these 70s throwbacks.
It's all rather laughable to be honest. I have seen some of my former Labour local councillors metaphorically fist-bumping on social media without an inkling of understanding that they are listening to the utterences of a snake oil salesman.
In fact, describing 'Our Andy' as a snake oil salesman generously credits him with being aware of the nonsense he speaks. I think he actually believes his own sales pitch.
There are a million reasons why the EU wouldn't really entertain a UK re-entry and even if they did, they would insist that any referendum would need to produce a 65% supermajority.
The stupidity of the voting public is something politicians rely upon. Whilst a huge portion of them may be as thick as a whale sandwich, they are also a vindictive bunch looking for someone to blame for their ills and those ills are fast approaching.
The oil crack-spread is growing at an alarming rate as the global glut of refined products becomes exhausted. This is combining with a lack of available crude to refine and a limited ability to refine it if it were available., with diesel already hitting two-quid a litre.
Little in this country moves without the involvement of diesel. Small retailers are already feeling the squeeze.
By next spring, Burnham will be looking back at October 2026, wishing he'd pressed the GE button while the public were still docile enough to elect him.
After a long winter, a miserable Christmas and no cheap holidays to console themselves with, the "just managing" won't be and they'll want someone to burn at the stake.
Please take a good look at the state that France, Germany, Belgium, Italy etc are currently in……all caused by the EUs open borders scheme, why would we want to go backwards….adopt the euro and be ruled by unelected officials? The only good thing is that there would be no need for parliament anymore……
When people cease to believe in God, pace Chesterton, they believe in anything. For the vacuous and morally upright British middle classes, rejoining the EU is the magic rain dance that will bring sunshine, plentiful harvests and long life. It won’t fix a thing and allow us to avoid fixing things by blaming Brexit, while tying up what’s left of government capacity in endless re-writing of regulations. The upside, as you say, will be Reform MEPs having a platform and a lot of cash, watching our political class suck up to Le Pen and AFD and making it easier for some of us to escape to Portugal or Poland. Every cloud …
Our Blue Peter PM typifies the appallingly low quality of MPs as summarised by Pete's father on his blog Turbulent Times this morning.
"There is something about the technical features of the EU that, when the average British MP confronts them, their brains dribble out of their arses leaving an aura of nothingness that not even zombies could rival."
We are currently governed by inadequate cretins or morons - take your pick!
The simple fact that a Customs Union requires a 'Supreme Authority', ie The EU Commission, to run it and implement the rules, seems to escape almost all MPs. It seems that MPs are happy to hand over running of this country to such an authority, but there are many in the country that would be angry, at the thought.

A fire alarm goes off and people inside an office use fire exits to abandon the building.
Meanwhile Andy dumbass Burnham goes into the building searching for the idiots that started the fire, to ask to rent an office.
By the time he finds them, they are roasted - but he still wants to rent, by now, a charred ruin.
