It gets worse regarding the ECHR as the Italian Government is currently finding out.
In a recent ruling, the ECHR determined that if *any part* of a country is unsafe, then the whole country is considered to be unsuitable for the return of asylum seekers or illegal immigrants.
Which means that for example, Egypt is no longer considered safe for returning migrants. That is the same Egypt which in 2023, received 14.9 million tourists from the rest of the world.
The logical conclusion is that Italy, and any other country attempting to return people there, should state that Italian tourists are forbidden from travelling there and that all passengers flights between Italy and Egypt are indefinitely suspended.
I agree with every word! David Starkey has remarked that "universal human rights" is a nonsensical idea...he may have been quoting someone else. It's an idea that makes the British government responsible for the welfare of everyone on the planet.
" human rights" loophole allows some of the vilest human beings to live alongside us, those who have committed depraved and sickening acts. In turn that denies the law-abiding and peaceful the human right of safety and peace of mind. That we often provide a lifestyle free of charge to such criminals, who contribute nothing, is another slap in the face to the very idea of fairness and justice.
Mercy for the nastiest criminal is punishment for the innocent. The whole nation suffers as this lack of penalty for the depraved becomes the norm.
Was about to write "more power to your elbow" as you examine and challenge the fiasco that is the ECHR, but given you've had a poorly arm, it might not be appropriate. Glad you're on the mend.
We voted them in by default - I have never voted Labour but like so many others could not vote Tory this time. The scale of Labour's 'win' was shocking, however. Just the thoughr of another 4+ years of this incompetence and plain 'wrong think' is frightening. Labour learnt nothing in opposition except how to screw up on a bigger scale. I feel a scad of letters to my new Labour MP coming on ... much good it may do either of us.
This may be the best succinct appraisal of what needs to be done that I have read this year, perhaps since even longer. Nigel Biggar's book 'What's wrong with rights?' address the problem with so called rights and contains direction on a positive path forward.
Agree wholeheartedly. But who.will institute such a change? We have voted in a government of rule-takers, people who love to follow the law to the letter, and then some. Anybody got any suggestions as to how this could happen within this Parliament's tenure?
The government hates us. To be pedantic, only 20% of us voted it in. A first step may be to find a way of rubbing Labour MPs' noses in the mess. Then to hold our noses and join the Tories who win a substantial vote in elections.
The current Tories, no. But the Tory Party is where the power is. People vote for it, for whatever reason. The Tory Party consists of the people in it, so we need to get some new Tories. The motley collection of little parties on the Right all with different notions are a sick joke. They just split the vote and let Labour in.

Pete, completely agree. The

Another super piece Pete! The Farmers revolt in Holland led to a change in govt. Lets get behind our Farmers!

You think the Tories would fix this John? The current mess was created during 14 unbroken yesrs of Tory govt
