It really very simple and plain to see if like Pete you dig deep into the issues that the MOD, like it has to said ALL government departments, are simply not fit for purpose having been badly led and taken over and staffed by far too many clueless lefties.
After all it was on the 23rd May 2006 the then Home Secretary John Read described the Home Office as not fit for.purpose and I'm pretty sure he could have said the same of the MOD, which he left on the 5th May handing over to Des Browne.
It took the down to earth Scot John Read just 18 days to make that statement.
The politicians look at alternatives and select the cheapest rather than the effective (if anyone really knows what effective is).
I have been impressed by huge swarms of drones demonstrated by various countries in displays across the world and the idea that such swarms could overwhelm a defence seem viable.
But then I think of a CH47 Hercules ‘Spooky’ of Vietnam vintage flying through the drone swarm, popping them all with a massive rate of fire mini gun barrage.
It would be more exciting if we focussed on AI controlled swarm and counter swarm forces backed up by high performance missiles, unmanned fighters and bombers, and space weapons. At least that sounds interesting.
The question is who are we defending or attacking? If it's the Chinese we lost already, they are gearing up to beat the most powerful military on earth, so we are nothing.
So, if we get rid of helicopters, and a pilot has to bail out over or near enemy territory, a drone can rescue him/her/them? I think not.
