I’m completely opposed to considering remaining in the ECHR.
My logic is, if we are in such conventions as the ECHR it’s because we don’t trust our own judiciary and appeals process.
In that case fix the judiciary rather than joining a foreign and often times more corrupt organisation to solve the problem.
Are we an independent country or not.
Turn around and there’s another organisation interfering with our democracy UN, EU,WEF, WHO off the top of my head.
What makes them more sage than our lot?
It seems to me that many of our problems are down to having joined a myriad of undemocratic, often corrupt international organisations that rule according to the mindset of the most powerful leadership of a country pulling the strings.
So much for democratic government when the people have absolutely no control over the instruments of power.
Get out of the ECHR and tell the people that they are the arbiters of the law not shadowy foreign despots.
If there are consequences can they be any worse than the situation we find ourselves? I think not.
It's been a fairly good week for the Tories. They sound more coherent right now, they've had a win in parliament with the U-turn over the winter fuel allowance and Jenrick's fare dodging sting pushed the transport police to actually take the matter serious.
Conversely Reform have had a bad week: Zia Yousuf out, then back in, then David Bull is made chairman and he promptly says immigration built Britain, Nigel Farage is who knows where and Lee Anderson can only deal in childish insults.
But none of that seems to matter because Reform are still polling better than everyone else and that voter resentment towards the other parties is still fuelling them. How long will that last though?
I've often wondered if there may be any mileage in flipping the thinking from 'smash the migrant trafficking gangs' to 'pay them and deport them'. The UK govt paid vast sums to 'compensate' slave owners in the West Indies back in the day - especially using loans, which were only finally paid off in 2015.
If what I have read over the years is correct, the gangs are usually Albanian, are motivated simply by the money, and use it to build themselves palacial homes back in their old villages back home.
And that they also have copies of all the migrants documents so they can trace them in the UK.
So we pay the traffickers for each migrant and their documents that they double-cross, for a one-time total payment, one-time immunity from prosecution, and permanent deportation. No money unless the people are in custody - so let the traffickers use their resources to gather the illegal migrants, rather than taxpayers money. Only then do they (the traffickers) get their payment and marching orders.
We get the deets of the migrants, so their home govts can no longer claim there's no proof of nationality - so they have to take them back.
And as a secondary benefit, it sows doubt across the whole trafficking 'system' - disrupting traffickers who want to carry on as normal - because nobody will know whether they are going to get double-crossed or not, and will be less willing to cough up their deposit for a boat place.
Got to be cheaper than keeping all these thousands of people on the taxpayers' dime for decades, supporting them here.
Great analysis. Treaties require enabling legislation in the UK and they can be neutered by disabling legislation, so you are correct that repealing the HRA is key. The Tories proposed legislation to immediately deport illegal immigrants etc is exactly what is needed + a proper defence of our coastline stopping them landing in the first place. This can be backed up by any number of measures creating a hostile environment / encouraging remigration as you have written about before. Reform are too amateurish (and deliberately so, how can it be otherwise?) to even articulate what needs to be done in real legal terms. I always swore I'd never vote Conservative again, but if draft legislation along the lines you have described were their manifesto and Robert Jenrick were leader AND they listened to Liz Truss / developed a coherent plan for constitutional reform / neutering the Blob - then (sigh) I would probably give them one more chance - but that's it!
All forms of immigration need to cease, until such time as our broken system is mended. Political Islam is on the rise, something that is highly undesirable in any free, democratic country. The Muslim Brotherhood are waiting in the shadows ! There's already been talks of sectarian politics & Anas Sarwar, the Scottish Labour leader, made the exact same WHITE speech as Humza Yusaf. He's already telling his Muslim labourites, in a filmed meeting, that he wants more Muslims in positions of power & into our schools ! Having read the Quŕan, it's not exactly what I'd call progressive, more oppressive & highly patriarchal, as are many old religions. Religion & politics do not make good bedfellows, as Western history has shown !
I believe that time is of the essence, most of us, whatever our colour want to live in peace, but this tiny island is overcrowded & England alone, is already the 7th most densely populated country in the world. Overcrowding & loss of flora & fauna will lead to survival of the fittest & our country will stagnate !
Tony Blair stitched up the UK like a kipper, doing things on the fly & thinking he was George Bush. He brought in the Supreme Court, super glued us to the ECHR, our judiciary is politicised with woke activists in it's Chambers. He placed labourites in the Civil Service & crippled this country, yes Miranda sold us down the river ! Interesting to find out that none of the EU countries are signed up to the ECHR !
We're no time to mess about undoing all the red tape that shackles us to the rusty ECHR & it's undemocratic, unelected judges. Just bin it, making an updated British equivalent. EU countries do what they want if it's in their country's best interests & so must we. People have had enough, no other country makes deals, that are really give aways & we pay them for the pleasure. No other country spends £Millions on Overseas Aid, £Millions on foreign farmers, £ Billions on illegals, £Billions on immigrant & indigenous scroungers, whilst taxing their own working & retired people to the hilt, hitting our farmers for money they don't have, the old & vulnerable penalised, savers penalised, illegals taking presidence for NHS treatments, interpretors for illegals & legal immigrants who haven't learned English & been here for years, illegals free travel, driving lessons & top of the social housing list, crime rocketing, sexual assaults & rape sky high, our kids not safe & our concerns not listened to, two tier policing, Muslim gangs ruling our prisons & the early releasing of criminals only to reoffend in days, migrant gangs roaming free the length & breadth of Britain, women scared to go out at night & hypervigilant of their kids in parks & the school playground, fathers getting wound up etc People have literally had enough. They're sick of being lied to & their intelligence insulted. Our police are a disgrace, they used to know the law inside out & were smartly turned out & disciplined. Recruiting woke Uni graduates has been a complete failure, they've lived all their lives in the education system, have little grasp of the law, yet are fast tracked for promotion over more deserving none graduate officers.
The smell of dissent is in the air & getting stronger with each passing day. There isn't time for your top brains to work so slowly. Letters behind names mean zilch, many of the public have top brains as you call them, but had to go to work & contribute to the family budget. It's a bit of brain power & plain old commonsense that's needed, what looks good on paper, dosen't always work out in practice !
Miranda's brains have ruined this country in the wake of countless other educated idiots !
"There's a reason some countries end up lining lawyers and judges up against the wall.". This is the key point, I think. Lawyers believe that they are cleverer and wiser than everyone else, and should have the right to overrule politicians. Every now and then it becomes necessary to shoot a few of them to re-establish government by King and Parliament.
When you play the game of thrones, you either win or you die. There is nothing in between.
The main issue for the tories is that people don’t trust them after the Boriswave, and after presiding over the country for 14 years and not doing anything useful. And having Badenoch as their leader just makes this worse, no one is going to trust a Nigerian on Immigration.
I agree with you that leaving the ECHR won’t necessarily solve anything. It is also likely possible to stay in it and just ignore it. The biggest problem in Britain is legal immigration, not illegal immigration and the ECHR doesn’t deal with that. It’s repeal seems to be a second brexit, a policy based silver bullet that doesn’t address the root causes of issues but instead soaks up right wing political sentiment.
Also, I don’t think scrapping renewable energy is the best idea. The world will eventually run out of oil. (Estimates currently suggest the world will run out of oil in 50 years) Furthermore, Britain is dependent on other countries for oil imports so it leaves the country volatile to the interests of those countries should there be a conflict of interest. Being ahead in the transition away from oil (which will inevitably need to happen) will put the country in a stronger long term position than the parts of the world scrambling to redo their infrastructure after there is an oil shortage.
Reform is still way ahead in the polls despite being badly run, (Zia Yusef and Rupert Lowe issues come to mind) and Farage and Tice saying stupid things to ’distance’ themselves from more right wing elements. They need to organise properly and get more intelligent leadership or they are going to take a major hit. And if they get into power they actually need to deliver.
I think it’s important Britain gets an organised right wing force, (that actually does something) otherwise there will be nothing to whether the storm as the country balkanises.
