This is depressing and worrying. If there is no political - as in ‘polite’ - outlet for popular concerns, then those concerns are either suppressed through force or re-directed into unpredictable and incoherent channels elsewhere.

Fundamentally you're right - the problem is when you don't get an intellectual basis of the party established first. It keeps bad uns out.
