I do hope they do well and praise from Pete North is worth having. It is a lonely job being a serious political party that never gets anywhere. Maybe it has role in just being there, setting the bar and keeping a flame alive. Like opera or ballet, it doesn’t have mass appeal but we should appreciate the skill that other singers and dancers should emulate. Which won’t happen. Maybe though someone will dare to do something different. An MP jumps ship, a celebrity (bigger than Rod Liddle) signs up or a rich donor takes a punt and suddenly, the game changes.
I agree. The SDP is also a bit too lefty for me. But I’ve still voted for them, (in the London mayoral) because it made a real change to be able to vote for a candidate, Amy Gallagher, who I felt was a person of character and integrity.
William Clouston will be missed. But best of luck to them.
I love reading your work Pete but you’re an idealist, a deep thinker sure but an idealist. Ideas are great and you’re right that we need right wing think tanks to inform serious right wing parties with a chance of power and putting those ideas into practice. You may mock Reform as a slop party and maybe they will fail if they should form a government which I think is highly unlikely but it wouldn’t be as disastrous as this Labour shitshow.
PS. What about an article on Burnham’s crusade to introduce PR and ensure we have a left wing coalition forever because be in no doubt if the right don’t win the next election that’s what will happen. And then there’ll be no need for you to write as everything on the right will be irrelevant.
A Reform government is actually worse than losing. One thing Rupert Lowe was entirely correct about is that there is nobody in the party giving any serious thought as to what to do with power. A Reform government would be like releasing a raccoon into Heathrow air traffic control. At most it would last eighteen months and be a repeat of the Johnson shitshow - and would then lose to a hard left coalition, from which there is no recovery.
Didn’t you watch Farage, Tice and Goodwin talking about the first 100 days in power yesterday? Plenty of promises on immigration, tax, energy costs including net zero and benefits. Much more too. Looked more serious than anything I’ve heard from the Tories or the left wing loonies.

And then I woke up.
Social Democrat = Liberal Democrat = Lefties.

The last leader of the SDP (Clouston) is on the advisory board on immigration with Restore.
Odd how he was a serious political figure for the SDP being selected to work with Restore he’s now not so serious.
Ho hum.

Sloganeering is not policy making.
